2021 Peter Cope sailing season report

RL360-sponsored sailor, Peter Cope, provides an update on his long awaited return to sailing after the obstructions caused by Covid-19. Read on to hear about his exciting 2021 season so far.

January-March

The start of the year was very slow with me only being able to get out twice in this period due to lockdowns and bad weather, which was really frustrating! However during this time I did lots of exercise to get fitter for when we were allowed to go out sailing again.

April-July

In the next part of the season, I did as much sailing as possible to make up for lost time and prepare myself for the nationals. I enjoyed many hours on the water in my aero as well as occasionally on the new fleet of sports boats. During this time, I competed in the local events and over the season I won the IOM youth championships, Laxey regatta, Manx aero and laser open, and placed second at the Ramsey regatta.

Nationals

Towards the end of August, I competed in the Rs aero national championships in the 7 fleet down at Hayling Island. It was a steep learning curve for me but by the end of the week I was consistently finishing in the top 10. I finished 12th overall, second u18 and top junior, which isn’t quiet as well as I wanted to do but is a good result for my first ever aero event.

Looking ahead

Still to come this year, I’ve got the Rs aero inland championships in the middle of October at Draycot water where hopefully I’ll improve and get a good result.
